He was raised in several countries including France, England, and Switzerland, as his family left Finland early on. His father was a Dutch businessman and his mother was a Russian artist. He married Allyn Ann McLerie in 1953, and they had two children together, Matthew and Iya Gaynes.

Career

George began his career in the theater, performing in Broadway musicals, and gained fame for his role as Henry Higgins in “My Fair Lady.” In the 1980s, he became widely recognized for his portrayal of Commandant Eric Lassard in the “Police Academy” films and as Henry Warnimont in the television series “Punky Brewster.” His career included various roles in film and television, showcasing his range as an actor.
