Grace Mathews was born to Trinidad “Trina” Escoda Gardner Matthews, a Filipina who was imprisoned by the Japanese during World War II, and James Matthews, Jr., an American Army photographer. She was one of five children in the family, and her brother Billy also pursued a career in photography. Grace and her mother made a unique achievement by both being selected as Queen for a Day on a popular game show in 1951, within a week of each other. She married Bruno Scherrer, who immigrated from Switzerland to the USA at the age of 22, and they had two children together named John and Elizabeth.
Death and Legacy
Grace Mathews died in 2019 in the United States. Her husband, Bruno, passed away in 2012, leaving behind Grace, their two children, and four grandchildren. Grace’s legacy lives on through her film work and the family she cherished.
