Gretl Basch was born on July 3, 1885, in Vienna, Austria-Hungary. She was married to Felix Basch, and they had one child together. She was also the mother of photographer Peter Basch. In 1945, she co-founded a charity called “Help Viennese Children” in Hollywood to assist needy children in Vienna.
Career
Gretl quickly made a name for herself on German stages, becoming a popular actress. The composer Franz Lehar met her early in her career and wrote a recommendation letter for her to perform in Berlin. In 1940, she opened a restaurant named “Grete’s Viennese” in New York.
