Harvey Braban was born George William Chapman on May 19, 1883, in Brighton, Sussex, England. He had two marriages, first to Lillian Christine, which ended in divorce, and then to Marjorie Liddard in 1930. He was the father of Roger Braban.

Career

Braban started in theater in the early 1900s, becoming well-known in both Broadway and West End productions by 1912. He often played supporting roles in silent films and melodramas, working with the Stoll Film Company and later with Ideal Films. His portrayal of the Chief Inspector in Alfred Hitchcock’s Blackmail (1929) was one of his most memorable roles, leading to many police inspector roles in talkies.

Death and Legacy

Harvey Braban passed away in 1943 in Kensington, London, at the age of 60. He is remembered for his contributions to early cinema and his distinct presence in theater. His performances had a lasting impact, particularly in the genres of crime and melodrama.
