Helen Gurley Brown was born on February 18, 1922, in Green Forest, Arkansas, to teachers Ira and Cleo Gurley. After her father’s tragic death in an elevator accident when she was just 10 years old, the family moved to Little Rock and later to Los Angeles during the late 1930s. She married David Brown on September 25, 1959, and remained married until his death in 2010.

Career

Brown served as the editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan magazine from 1965 to 1996, where she became known for publishing candid reader confessions and provocative articles. Her work at Cosmopolitan drew both praise and criticism, with some, like Betty Friedan, calling it “quite obscene and quite horrible.” She also appeared in various films and television shows, adding to her prominence in the media landscape.
