Helen Jones Woods

Helen Jones Woods was an American actor who is best known for her roles in International Sweethearts of Rhythm, That Man of Mine, and Harlem Carnival.

Personal and Family Life

Helen was born on October 9, 1923, in Meridian, Mississippi. She was adopted by Dr. Laurence Clifton Jones, who founded the Piney Woods Country Life School, an African American boarding school. She was encouraged by her adoptive mother, Grace, to pursue her passion for music. Helen married William Alfred Woods and had four children.

Career

Helen Woods was a talented trombonist for the all-female big band, the International Sweethearts of Rhythm, which toured during World War II. After leaving the music scene due to discrimination, she dedicated 30 years of her life to nursing and social work at Douglas County Hospital. In 2007, she was honored by being inducted into the Omaha Black Music Hall of Fame.

Helen Jones Woods passed away on July 25, 2020, in Sarasota, Florida, due to complications from COVID-19. Her legacy as a musician and a health care worker is remembered by many.
