Hull married actress Juliet Van Wyck Frémont in 1913, and they had three children together. The couple lived on a farm in Old Lyme, Connecticut, for over thirty years.

Hull started his acting career on Broadway, where he gained fame for the role of Jeeter in Tobacco Road.
