Hoagy Carmichael was born on November 22, 1899, in Bloomington, Indiana. He had two marriages, first to Ruth Meinardi from 1937 to 1955, with whom he had two children, and later to Wanda McKay from 1977 until his death in 1981. Initially, he studied law at Indiana University before choosing to pursue a career in music.
