Howard Duff

Howard Duff was an American actor who is best known for his roles in “The Naked City,” “Kramer vs. Kramer,” and “Brute Force.” He had a career that spanned over four decades in radio, film, and television.

Personal and Family Life

Born Howard Green Duff on November 24, 1913, in Bremerton, Washington, he grew up in the Seattle area. Duff attended Roosevelt High School, where he participated in basketball and discovered his passion for acting. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II before pursuing acting full-time. In 1951, he married actress Ida Lupino, with whom he starred in several films, and they had a daughter named Bridget. The couple divorced in 1984 after separating in 1966. Duff later married Judy Jenkinson in 1986.

Career

Duff’s acting journey began on the radio, famously voicing the character Sam Spade from 1946 to 1950. He made a successful transition to film, appearing in notable movies throughout the 1940s and 1950s, including film noirs and family dramas. While he was not always in lead roles, his performances garnered praise. Duff found considerable success on television, starring in series like “Mr. Adams and Eve” alongside Lupino, and later in “The Felony Squad.” His versatility enabled him to play both leading and supporting characters throughout his career.

Death and Legacy

Howard Duff passed away on July 8, 1990, from a heart attack in Santa Barbara, California, at the age of 76. He left behind a body of work that showcased his talent across various genres and mediums.
