Born Howard Green Duff on November 24, 1913, in Bremerton, Washington, he grew up in the Seattle area. Duff attended Roosevelt High School, where he participated in basketball and discovered his passion for acting. In 1951, he married actress Ida Lupino, with whom he starred in several films, and they had a daughter named Bridget. The couple divorced in 1984 after separating in 1966. Duff later married Judy Jenkinson in 1986.
