Howard E. Jackson, also known by the nickname “California Flash,” began his martial arts journey at Chuck Norris Karate Studios in Torrance, California, in the early 1970s. He was a Marine stationed at Camp Pendleton when he first met Chuck Norris, which paved the way for his future career in film and martial arts. Jackson was recognized as the first black martial artist inducted into the Black Belt Hall of Fame and held a 6th-degree black belt in Tang Soo Do.

After retiring from competitive martial arts in 1983, Howard worked as a bodyguard and trainer for Chuck Norris.
