Igor Gorbachyov

Igor Gorbachyov was a Russian actor best known for his role as Chichikov in the stage and film versions of “Revizor” (The Inspector-General), based on the novel by Nikolay Gogol.

Personal and Family Life

Igor Olegovich Gorbachyov was born on October 20, 1927, in Leningrad, USSR (now St. Petersburg, Russia). He grew up in a family with a father who was an engineer and a mother who taught French literature. He experienced the hardships of the Leningrad siege during World War II, which left lasting effects on him. Despite these challenges, he pursued his education in psychology at Leningrad University and later attended the Institute of Theatre, Music, and Cinematography.

Career

Gorbachyov had a remarkable career as a theater actor, performing with the Bolshoi Drama Theatre from 1951 to 1954 and the Pushkin Drama Theatre from 1954 until 1992. He worked with many esteemed actors during this time and became the Artistic Director of the Pushkin Drama Theatre from 1975 to 1992. He received several accolades, including the State Prize of the USSR in 1973 for his contributions to the stage, and he later became a respected professor at his alma mater.

Death and Legacy

After facing a conflict with the mayor of St. Petersburg in 1992, Gorbachyov suffered a heart attack but recovered. He eventually limited his performances to small roles in films and focused on teaching. Igor Gorbachyov passed away on February 19, 2003, in St. Petersburg. He was buried in the Necropolis of Masters of Art at Volkovo Cemetery, leaving behind a rich legacy in Russian theater and film.
