Indubala

Indubala was an Indian actress and singer best known for her performances in Bengali and Hindi films, as well as her contributions to Nazrul songs. Born in November 1899 in Amritsar, she became a significant figure in Indian music and cinema.

Personal and Family Life

Indubala was born into a family deeply involved in the circus; her mother Rajabala was a trapeze artist. After Indubala’s birth, Rajabala struggled to support her family and later moved to Calcutta with her daughter. Indubala grew up training in music, initially under her mother’s guidance, and later from prominent teachers, marking the start of her career in performance at a young age.

Career

She began her career in music and acting early, recording her first songs at the age of 12. Indubala quickly rose to fame as a singer and actress, known for her beautiful voice and engaging performances. Over her lifetime, she appeared in around 48 films and recorded approximately 280 songs, making her one of the first Bengali artists to record Hindustani songs. Despite facing challenges, she remained a respected figure in the industry.

Death and Legacy

Indubala passed away on November 30, 1984, in Calcutta due to a stroke after experiencing health issues for some time. Her legacy lives on through her music and performances, and she is remembered as a pioneer in both film and music in India. The Sangeet Natak Academy honored her with a lifetime achievement award in 1975 for her contributions to the arts.
