Jack Buchanan

Jack Buchanan was a Scottish-American actor who is best known for The Band Wagon, Monte Carlo, and As Long as They’re Happy. He had a long and successful career in entertainment spanning stage and film.

Jack Buchanan was born Walter John Buchanan on April 2, 1891, in Helensburgh, Scotland. He was married twice: first to Saffo Arnau from 1915 to 1920, and later to Susan Bassett in 1947 until his death. With Bassett, he had a step-daughter from her previous marriage. Buchanan did not have any children of his own.

Career

Buchanan made his stage debut in Britain in 1912 and later gained fame on Broadway in 1924. His film career began in 1917 during the silent film era, but he is most remembered for his role in the musical The Band Wagon alongside stars like Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse. He also managed the Garrick Theatre after the war and was a successful recording artist.

Death and Legacy

Jack Buchanan passed away on October 20, 1957, in London, England, due to spinal cancer. His contribution to the entertainment industry is still recognized today, particularly for his performance in The Band Wagon, which remains a classic.
