Born John Warden Lebzelter Jr. on September 18, 1920, in Newark, New Jersey, Warden was raised in a working-class family. He was expelled from school for fighting, after which he pursued a career in boxing. Jack married Wanda Ottoni in 1958, and they had one child together. Although they separated in the mid-1970s, they remained legally married until his death.
