James Carew

James Carew was born in Goshen, Indiana. Before his acting career began, he worked as a clerk in a publishing firm. He married Ellen Terry in 1907, who was a famed actress, but their marriage ended in divorce in 1910. Carew was a stepfather to Edith Craig and E. Gordon Craig.

Career

Carew began his stage career at the age of 21 in “Damon and Pythias” in Chicago, later moving to England in 1905 to pursue classical theater. He became well-known for playing both heroic and villainous roles in nearly 80 films, making his film debut in 1913. His transition to talkies was seamless, and he continued to enjoy success in cinema through the late 1930s.

Death and Legacy

James Carew passed away in London at the age of 62 on April 4, 1938. His work in theater and film left a lasting impression, and he is remembered for his talent in portraying complex characters on stage and screen.
