James Cotton

Born on July 1, 1935, in Tunica, Mississippi, James was the youngest of eight siblings. His parents worked as sharecroppers, and his father was a Baptist preacher. He was married to Jacklyn Hairston, and together they had three children.

Career

James Cotton was a prominent blues harmonica player. In the 1950s and 1960s, he collaborated with famous musicians like Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf. In 1966, he founded the James Cotton Blues Band, which performed alongside rock legends such as Janis Joplin and Cream.

Death and Legacy

James Cotton passed away on March 16, 2017, in Austin, Texas, due to pneumonia. His contributions to music earned him a place in the Blues Hall of Fame in 2006, celebrating his significant impact on blues and rock music.
