He was married to actress Alice Brady from May 20, 1919, until their divorce on January 14, 1922; they had one child together, a son named Donald, born in 1922. Crane was active in the Broadway scene starting in 1917 and later appeared in silent films for Paramount.

Crane began his acting career in silent films and transitioned to talkies, making a mark with his distinctive roles. He is particularly recognized for his portrayal of the Pharaoh in The Mummy (1932), which remains one of his most memorable performances.
