James Falkland was born on September 14, 1936, in Scotland. He began acting at the age of eleven and joined the Royal Air Force, where he met his future wife, Debonnaire. They were both instructors in Berlin and later moved to the UK to pursue their acting careers.

Falkland joined the Shakespeare Company at Stratford after returning to the UK and later moved to Malta, where he acted and directed for the Malta Amateur Dramatic Society. In 1970, he relocated to Kenya, becoming a key figure at the Donovan Maule Theatre in Nairobi. He managed the theater and later founded the Phoenix Players, producing high-quality theatrical performances throughout East Africa.
