James John Corbett, often referred to as “Gentleman Jim,” was born into a working-class family. He was married twice, first to Olive Lake and later to Jessie Taylor, with whom he remained for many years. His early life involved various jobs, including working as a bank clerk before rising to fame as a boxer.

Boxing Career

Corbett made history in 1892 when he became the world heavyweight champion after defeating the much heavier John L. Sullivan. Known for his strategic fighting style, he was considered the first scientific boxer, focusing on speed and technique rather than sheer force. He faced notable opponents and fought Peter “The Black Prince” Jackson, becoming a key figure in boxing history.

Death and Legacy

Corbett passed away on February 18, 1933, due to liver cancer in Bayside, New York. His legacy lives on as he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990 and the World Boxing Hall of Fame in 1980. Additionally, his life story inspired the film “Gentleman Jim,” which featured Errol Flynn in the lead role.
