James Otis graduated from Stamford Catholic High School and then attended Catholic University in Washington, DC, where he earned a degree in Drama in 1970. He served on the Academy Award Nominating Committee twice and was active in theater, performing seasons at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago as the Ghost of Christmas Past in A Christmas Carol. In the 1990s, he moved to Glendale, California.
