Born Emma H. Miller, she was the daughter of William Jones Miller and Lulu Miller. Jane had three husbands throughout her life: Frank Powell, John Lewis Clawson, and Charles Albert Smylie. She married Smylie in 1933, remaining with him until her death in 1936.

Jane Miller passed away on September 20, 1936, in New York City. Though her career was brief, she left a mark with her performances in early film. Her work continues to be remembered in the history of American cinema.
