Janis Grantins was born on June 7, 1909, in Riga, Latvia. He studied acting at the Drama Studio of the Latvian Worker’s Theatre from 1931 to 1934. Throughout his career, he worked at various theatres in Latvia, including the Riga Drama Theatre and the Theatre for Youth in Riga, where he served until the end of his life.

Career

Grantins was designated as the Honorable Actor of Latvia in 1949. He received the State Prize of the USSR the same year for his remarkable portrayal of Janis Rainis. Besides acting, he also taught seminars focused on the history of Latvian theatre, further influencing the next generation of artists.
