Jean Porter grew up in Texas before moving to pursue her acting dreams. She married director Edward Dmytryk in 1948, and together they had three children: Richard, Victoria, and Rebecca. Rebecca later became a wildlife rescuer. Throughout her life, Jean was known for being a lifelong supporter of the liberal Democratic Party.

Jean began her film career with an uncredited role in 1939 and went on to play sweet-natured characters in various films in the 1940s. Despite her talent, she never reached top stardom.
