Jeff Chandler

Jeff Chandler was an American actor who is best known for his roles in “Broken Arrow,” “Merrill’s Marauders,” and “The Battle at Apache Pass.” He gained fame for his performances in westerns and action films during the 1950s.

Personal and Family Life

Jeff Chandler was born Ira Grossel on December 15, 1918, in Brooklyn, New York. He attended Erasmus High School and later took drama courses, working in stock theater for two years. Chandler married Marjorie Hoshelle in 1946, and they had two children before divorcing in 1954.

Career

Chandler started his acting career in radio dramas and comedies, eventually getting signed by Universal Pictures. He became known for his distinctive prematurely gray hair and often portrayed Native American characters, notably Cochise in “Broken Arrow” and its sequels. He acted alongside many famous leading ladies, enhancing his on-screen presence in various genres.

Death and Legacy

Jeff Chandler died on June 17, 1961, at the age of 42 due to complications from surgery for a slipped disc. His contributions to film, particularly in the western genre, have left a lasting impact on Hollywood, and he is remembered for both his talent and charisma.
