Joan Maude

Joan Maude was an English actress best known for her roles in A Matter of Life and Death, Hobson’s Choice, and The Lash. Born on January 16, 1908, in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, she had a successful career in both film and theatre, continuing until her later years.

Personal and Family Life

Joan Maude was the daughter of Nancy Price and Charles Maude. Throughout her career, she was married twice; first to Frank Waters until his death in 1954, and later to Oliver Woods from 1956 until his passing in 1972. She had a great-grandmother on her father’s side who was the famous opera singer Jenny Lind, also known as “the Swedish nightingale.” Joan was also a cousin of the actor Cyril Maude.

Career

Joan made her stage debut at the age of thirteen, performing as a solo dancer in “Cairo” at His Majesty’s Theatre in London. She gained recognition for her stage performances in the West End, particularly in Shakespearean roles during the 1920s and early 1930s. Later, she shifted her focus mainly to films and television, delivering memorable performances throughout her career.

Death and Legacy

Joan Maude passed away on September 28, 1998, in Lewes, East Sussex, England. Her contributions to both film and theatre have left a lasting impact, and she is remembered for her versatile acting skills and dedication to her craft.
