She had a great-grandmother on her father’s side who was the famous opera singer Jenny Lind, also known as “the Swedish nightingale.” Joan was also a cousin of the actor Cyril Maude.

Joan made her stage debut at the age of thirteen, performing as a solo dancer in “Cairo” at His Majesty’s Theatre in London. She gained recognition for her stage performances in the West End, particularly in Shakespearean roles during the 1920s and early 1930s. Later, she shifted her focus mainly to films and television, delivering memorable performances throughout her career.
