Joanne grew up performing as a child dancer and was the first black Principal Boy in pantomime at the Theatre Royal Stratford. In the early 1980s, she recorded a single with notable musicians, including Peter Green and Peter Bardens.
Career
Beginning her career in the 1980s, Joanne joined the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry and co-founded the BiBi Crew, a group of black actresses, with whom she co-wrote and produced various theatre shows. Throughout her career, she also appeared in several television series, including “The Bill” and “Birds of a Feather.” Just before her tragic passing, she completed filming for the new series “UGetMe.”
Death and Legacy
Joanne Campbell died suddenly at the age of 38 due to deep vein thrombosis while working on a new children’s series for the BBC. Her contributions to British television and theatre, particularly as a trailblazer for black actresses, have left a lasting impact on the industry.
