Joe Gold was born Sidney Gold on March 10, 1922, to Abraham Mordechai “Max” Gold and Zelda “Jennie” Feierman in Los Angeles, California. He had three siblings: Ruben “Robert” Gold, Nathan Gold, and Eunice Gold. Throughout his life, he maintained close relationships with his family, and they supported his endeavors both in acting and in his business ventures.
Career
Gold established Gold’s Gym, which became a popular fitness center known for attracting bodybuilders, especially after Arnold Schwarzenegger promoted it during his rise to fame. Joe later co-owned World Gym International with his friend Gordon Mitchell. He sold Gold’s Gym in 1970 to pursue a career in the merchant marine but saw the gym chain grow significantly under new ownership.
Death and Legacy
Joe Gold passed away on July 11, 2004, in Marina Del Rey, California, due to congestive heart failure. At the time of his death, Gold’s Gym had expanded to have 2.5 million members worldwide, showcasing his lasting impact on the fitness industry.
