Joe Knowland was born on July 26, 1930, in Oakland, California. He was the son of William F. Knowland, a U.S. Senator, and the grandson of Congressman Joseph R. Knowland. Joe graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1953 with degrees in Speech and Communications & Public Policy. He was married to Dolores Faye Beall, with whom he had three children.
Career
Joe began his career in journalism in 1954, working as a cub reporter and later became the Editor and Publisher of the “Oakland Tribune” from 1974 to 1977. He earned the “Publisher of the Year” award in 1975 from the California Press Association. After leaving the newspaper industry, he ventured into acting, appearing in various films and TV shows, and also ran for the United States Senate in 1986.

Joe Knowland passed away on March 14, 2019, in San Francisco, California.
