Joel Thomas Ashley was born on April 7, 1919, in Atlanta, Georgia, to Alsie Ashley and Beulah Mariah Rodgers. He attended several military academies and graduated from Black Foxe Military Academy in Los Angeles. Ashley married Margalo Francis Wilson in 1942, and they had two daughters. After Wilson’s death, he married Erna Maria Rade in 1961.
