Long was a talented left-handed violinist and started an eleven-piece band initially called ‘The Freshmen’, later known as ‘The Duke Collegians.’ He achieved significant success with their 1940 hit song “A Shanty In Old Town,” which sold over a million copies. The band became known for their mix of swing and sweet music, becoming popular among younger audiences in the South and Midwest.
Death and Legacy
Johnny Long passed away on October 31, 1972, in Parkersburg, West Virginia, at the age of 56. After a successful career in music, he left the industry to become an English teacher. Long is remembered for his contributions to the big band era and for his performances in film and music.
