Joseph Calleia was an American actor who is best known for Touch of Evil, Gilda, and For Whom the Bell Tolls. Born on August 4, 1897, in Notabile, Malta, he became one of Hollywood’s famous character actors known for his intense portrayals.

Calleia was married to Eleonore Vassallo from 1929 until her death in 1968. He was known as a kind and generous man, often appreciating the support of his fans. While he spent much of his career in America, he maintained strong ties to his Maltese roots.
