She was the daughter of stage actors Edward Sedgwick and Josephone Walker, and she performed with her siblings as “The Five Sedgwicks.” Throughout her life, she had two marriages, first to William Steele and later to Justin H. McCloskey. Her sister Eileen Sedgwick and her brother Edward Sedgwick, who was a director, were also part of the entertainment industry.

Josie Sedgwick passed away on April 30, 1973, in Santa Monica, California, due to a stroke. After her acting career, she opened a talent agency called Josie Sedgwick-Ray West Inc., contributing to the industry in a different capacity.
