Born Enid Joyce Andrews on December 17, 1919, in Greenwich, London, she was the daughter of an engineer. Joy attended Thornbank School in Bexhill, Sussex. During World War II, she paused her acting career to serve as a nurse, but returned to the stage after the war ended. She was married and had a daughter, and they lived in Chelsea.
