Joy Hallward was born on December 31, 1911, in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. She was the older sister of actress Gloria Grahame. Joy married John Mitchum on March 22, 1941, and they had two daughters, Victoria Ann Mitchum and Christine Estelle Mitchum. The couple later divorced.

Joy Hallward passed away on February 23, 2003, in Granada Hills, California, USA. She is remembered for her contributions to film and television, as well as for being part of a notable acting family. Joy was portrayed by Frances Barber in the film Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool (2017).
