June Johnson was born on May 28, 1918, in St. Louis, Missouri. She was the daughter of comedian Chic Johnson and Catherine V. Creed. June had two marriages in her life: first to Gene Meredith, with whom she had one child, and later to Marty May until his passing in 1975. One of her sons, Bob May, was adopted by her second husband, Marty.
