Kay Johnson was an American actress who is best known for her roles in Of Human Bondage, Mr. Lucky, and Dynamite.

Born as Catherine Townsend Johnson on November 29, 1904, in Mount Vernon, New York, she was the daughter of architect Thomas Robert Johnson and Grace Darling Townsend. She began her education at the Drew Seminary for Young Women and pursued her dream of acting at Sargent’s Dramatic School of the American Academy of Dramatic Art. In 1928, she married actor John Cromwell, and they had two sons, including the well-known actor James Cromwell.
