Lajos Mezey

Lajos Mezey was an American actor best known for his roles in various Hungarian films and theater productions. He was born on August 2, 1918, in Komárom, Hungary, and passed away on April 13, 2006, in Budapest, Hungary.

Personal and Family Life

Lajos Mezey came from a Calvinist noble family; his father served as a high officer in the army. His mother was originally from Austria and belonged to a Catholic family. Mezey was educated at military schools and initially attended a military air force academy before transitioning to a career in acting.

Career

After meeting the director of the Hungarian National Theater during his time as a steward for “MALÉRT” airlines, he was encouraged to pursue acting. He graduated from Kálmán Rózsahegyi Official Actor School in 1939 and began his acting career at the “Víg” Theater in Budapest. Over the years, he took on roles in various theaters and participated in over 123 plays, including notable characters like Romeo and Peer Gynt. He was also a prisoner of war during World War II, during which he created a theater in captivity.

Death and Legacy

Lajos Mezey died on April 13, 2006. His contributions to theater and film are remembered through his extensive body of work, which includes over 70 films. In 1978, he received a Honor prize from the city of Kecskemét, cementing his legacy as a respected actor in Hungarian theater.
