Lane Bradford was born John Myrtland Le Varre Jr. on August 29, 1922, in Yonkers, New York. He was married twice, first to Joan Irene Velin from 1952 to 1965 and later to Mary Schrock until his death in 1973. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He has notable relatives, including actor André de la Varre Jr., who was his cousin.

Bradford was known during the 1940s and 1950s for playing tough characters in Western films, often portraying villains. He performed impressive stunts, including some iconic moments such as being underneath a team of horses in a film. Bradford also worked alongside his father, John Merton, in several movies.
