Laurel Goodwin was born Carolyn J Schoenberger on August 11, 1942, in Wichita, Kansas. She studied drama at San Francisco State University, where she developed her acting skills. Goodwin had two marriages; she was married to David Perna from 1962 until their divorce and later to businessman Walter Wood from 1981 until his death in 2010. She had one brother, Gary Robert Schoenberger, and was the daughter of Julius James Schoenberger and Margarett Ann Miller.

Goodwin started her career as a child model and made her film debut alongside Elvis Presley in Girls! Girls! Girls! in 1962.
