Lawrence Mervil Tibbet, known as Larry, was born into a difficult family situation after his father, a sheriff, was killed when Lawrence was just six years old. He had two marriages; his first was to Grace Mackay Smith from 1919 to 1931, with whom he had two children, followed by his marriage to Jane Marston Burgard in 1932, which lasted until his death in 1960 and produced one child.

Tibbett made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1923 and quickly became a star, known for creating lead roles in several world premieres.
