Leigh Whipper was an American actor who is best known for his roles in “Of Mice and Men,” “Porgy,” and “King of the Zombies.” He was a pioneering figure in the theater industry, especially for African-American actors, and made significant contributions to the performing arts.

Leigh Whipper was born on October 29, 1876, in Charleston, South Carolina. He attended Howard University and later graduated from Harvard Law School. He was married to Lillian E. Myles, with whom he adopted two sons, James Myles Whipper and Leigh Richard Whipper. His son James sadly lost his life during the Korean War. Whipper had a passion for music and was also an accomplished pianist.

Career Achievements

Whipper began his acting career at a time when African-American roles in theater and film were scarce. He appeared in over twenty plays and became known for his remarkable portrayal of Crooks in “Of Mice and Men.” In 1937, he founded the Negro Actors Guild to support fellow black actors, and in 1913, he became the first black member of the Actors Equity Association. Throughout his career, he acted in both films and radio, leaving a lasting impact on the industry.

Death and Legacy

Leigh Whipper passed away on July 26, 1975, in New York City, just a few months before his 99th birthday. His contributions to the arts, particularly for African-Americans, have left a significant legacy. For his work, he received special recognition from the Ethiopian government for his portrayal of Emperor Haile Selassie, highlighting his influence and importance in the realm of acting.
