He was the son of Mabel Elizabeth Davies, who was Welsh, and Ingvard Eversen Nielsen, a Danish-born Mountie. He studied acting in Toronto and New York and started his career at a young age. Nielsen was married four times and had two daughters.

Leslie Nielsen passed away on November 28, 2010, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, due to complications from pneumonia. He was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Fort Lauderdale.
