Lewis Casson was born on October 26, 1875, in Birkenhead, Cheshire, England, to a family with a strong interest in the arts. He married Sybil Thorndike in December 1908, and together they raised four children, including actors Ann, Christopher, John, and Mary Casson. Casson also became a grandfather to Glynis Casson and theater scholar Diana Devlin.

Career

He began his acting career with amateur theatre before going professional in 1903. He directed plays that challenged societal norms and was known for his collaboration with playwright George Bernard Shaw. Casson was an influential figure in promoting socialism in theatre and became President of the British Actors’ Equity Association from 1941 to 1945.

Death and Legacy

Lewis Casson passed away on May 16, 1969, in London at the age of 93. His contributions to the arts were recognized when he was knighted in 1945 for his service to drama.
