Born Madelyn Earle Jones on March 21, 1917, in Salley, South Carolina, Lois initially dreamed of becoming a missionary in China. However, after participating in school plays, she discovered her passion for acting. While studying at college, her mother encouraged her to pursue acting and submitted her photo to a CBS Radio contest, which she won. This led to her adopting the name Lois Collier for her acting career.
