Luiz Gonzaga was a Brazilian musician and composer who is best known for his contributions to the genre of forró, as well as his popular songs and performances. Born on December 13, 1912, in Exu, Pernambuco, Brazil, he became a significant figure in Brazilian music before his death on August 2, 1989, in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil.

Personal and Family Life

Luiz Gonzaga came from a large family, being the second of nine children. His father was Januário José dos Santos, and his mother was Ana Batista de Jesus. He was married to Helena Neves Cavalcanti with whom he had one child, and before that, he was married to Odaléia Guedes dos Santos, with whom he also had a child. Luiz also adopted a girl named Rosa with Helena. He was the father of renowned composer Gonzaguinha and grandfather to several grandchildren, including Amora Pêra.

Death and Legacy

Luiz Gonzaga passed away on August 2, 1989, leaving behind a rich legacy in Brazilian music. He is celebrated as the “Rei do Baião” (King of Baião) and is remembered for his significant impact on the culture of northeastern Brazil. His music continues to influence artists, and his compositions are still performed and loved by many.
