Malachi Throne was born on December 1, 1928, in New York City to parents Samuel and Rebecca Throne, who were immigrants from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He had two children from his first marriage to Judith Merians, which ended in divorce. Throne later married Marjorie Bernstein in 1992, remaining together until his death in 2013.

Throne started acting at a young age and worked in the theater during World War II before pursuing further education.
