Manja Behrens was married to Karl von Appen from 1958 until his death in 1981. She was the daughter of a lawyer and public trustee. During her early career, she worked as a dental assistant while attending acting classes with renowned coaches Waldemar Staegemann and Erich Ponto.

Behrens was an ensemble member of the Dresdner Staatsschauspiel, performing from 1935 to 1953. She later joined the Volksbühne Berlin from 1954 until 1967, and her final engagement was with the Maxim Gorky Theater from 1967 to 1991. While her relationship with Nazi leader Martin Bormann caused a twenty-year acting ban, she continued to leave a mark on the German theater scene.
