Marcus Smythe was born on March 26, 1950, in Berea, Ohio. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in theatre from Otterbein University and later received a Master of Fine Arts from Ohio University. After college, he had a brief stint at the Cleveland Playhouse before moving to New York City. He was married to Suzanne Goddard-Smythe and had two sons, Harrison and Duncan, with whom he was actively involved in the Boy Scouts.
