Maus graduated from the US Army Military Academy at West Point in 1874 and became an infantry officer. He played a crucial role in the Indian Wars and was involved in significant events, including the pursuit of Geronimo and the Nez Perce leader Chief Joseph. His acts of bravery earned him a promotion to captain and later to Brigadier General before his retirement in 1913.
