Raised in a Catholic family as the youngest of five siblings, he initially aimed for a basketball career before turning his focus to acting. Goddard attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City after being encouraged by his college’s drama society head. He was married three times, with notable relationships including actress Susan Anspach, with whom he had two adopted children.
